VAT
Understanding VAT in the UAE: A Practical Guide
4 min read
Value Added Tax has applied to most goods and services in the UAE since 2018, and it's one of the first compliance questions any new business needs to answer: do we need to register, and if so, when?
Do you need to register?
Registration is mandatory once your taxable supplies and imports go over the mandatory threshold set by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) within the previous 12 months, or if you expect to cross it in the next 30 days. Below that, but above a lower voluntary threshold, you can choose to register. This is often worth doing early if you're issuing invoices to VAT-registered clients, since it lets you reclaim VAT on your own business expenses.
What registration actually involves
Once registered, you'll receive a Tax Registration Number (TRN) that must appear on every VAT invoice you issue. From that point, you're responsible for charging VAT correctly, keeping organised records of every sale and purchase, and filing returns on the schedule the FTA assigns to your business, typically quarterly, though some businesses file monthly.
Filing and record-keeping
Each return reports the VAT you've charged customers (output tax) against the VAT you've paid on business expenses (input tax), and you either pay the difference or claim a refund. The FTA expects supporting records, such as invoices, credit notes, and import documentation, to be kept for a minimum retention period, so the biggest practical risk isn't the tax itself. It's incomplete records at filing time.
Common mistakes worth avoiding
The businesses that run into trouble are rarely trying to avoid VAT. They're usually just late registering after crossing the threshold, inconsistent about which transactions are zero-rated versus exempt, or missing a filing deadline because nobody owned the task internally. All three are avoidable with a clear process and someone tracking your deadlines.
If you're unsure whether your business needs to register, or you want a health check on your existing VAT setup, that's exactly the kind of question we help businesses work through every week.
